Stare At Me
2022,8 ft X 8 ft Cube, made with maple woods, red strings, and bells.

Inspiration:

A rural woman was interviewed about her life of refusing to be ordinary. She felt that her whole life is being watched.  She was scared to fall in love freely because the conservative societal beliefs in China would view that such a woman is dissolute. The women could not be too sociable, too loud, too good, or too bad because people will always look down and judge her. Nothing the women could do would save her from be judgment and disproval.

Thoughts:

This is not a single case; millions of people are just like her in this world. We all sympathize with her, but we are all “her.” Who does not feel watched? As long as we are breathing, we will be stared by friends, parents, and society.

We are all in this cage, as soon as we make a wrong move, the bells will ring. Then people will turn to stare and judge us.
